Engineering Physics is one of the most challenging program at UBC. It is an intense, five-year undergraduate engineering, physics and math combined major tailored for  students who want to work at the new leading edge of science and engineering, whether in industry or academia.  Technical experience is a focus in this program and 4 work terms of Co-op is mandatory.

One of the most interesting course in this program is Physics 253, Intro to Instrument Design and it is exclusive to Engineering Physics student.  Every year, a different goal is chosen and students have to use their unlimited creativity and knowledge to archieve this goal with limited resources.    I took this course in summer 2004 and that year's goal was to build an autonomous rescue robot.  This robot is capable of navigating steep ad obstacle-strewn terrain, reaching and detecting the edge of a cliff and reaching down to rescue an incapacitated hiker.  In this course, I spent over 70hr/week for a total of 6 weeks and I lerarned not only sophiscated computer, electrical and the hardware knowledge, but also excellent communcation and team-working skills.
